Not getting notified of DMs

Whenever i get a DM from someone, it doesn’t show up in my notifications center. I just went to my inbox and saw a had a bunch of unread messages from weeks ago that I didn’t know about just because i didn’t get notified to check it the same way I get notified when someone replies to my post or comment.
